A 17th Century farmhouse near Dunmow, is for sale with a collection of sitting tenants – 24 white doves in their own Victorian dovecote.
Ashfields Farmhouse in Great Canfield is on the market with leading local estate agents, Mullucks Wells. The Victorian dovecote was built at the six bedroom farmhouse when it was a fully working farm. The current owner, Barry Pestell, moved in six years ago with his wife and two daughters. They renovated the house throughout, but hadn’t altered the empty dovecote.
“After we’d been here a year or so I was doing some building work at another house nearby,” explains owner, Barry Pestell. “We had to demolish an old brick shed, but as we were about to knock it down I found about 15 white doves and their young ones nesting in there. The owner didn’t know what to do with them, but I knew I had the empty dovecote back at Ashfields. So I cleared it out and spent two days gently catching the birds and transporting them to their new home.
“Five years later there’s now a couple of dozen of them and they are very happy here!”
Barry Pestell is well-known locally as the founder of Pestell & Co estate agents based in Great Dunmow and Bishop’s Stortford. He now owns De Vere Construction building and converting executive properties.
As an agent with a reputation for selling country houses, Mullucks Wells are marketing the property. Director William Wells said: “As a family house this really ticks all the boxes. It has plenty of space including an annex and an area currently laid out as a hair salon. Then in the grounds there are the stables, the pool and the tennis court. Add to that the ideal location for schools and facilities - and it really is an exceptional family home.”
Ashfields Farmhouse with stable block, garages, one bedroom annex, swimming pool, tennis court and six acres of grounds, is on the market at £1,395,000 with Mullucks Wells. An additional two bedroom cottage and outbuildings including offices and garages are also available. Please call 01279 755400 for more information.
