Cowlass or Cowless? Quest to Solve Local Name Puzzle
The farm in Radwinter End is known both as ‘Cowlass Farm' and ‘Cowless Farm'. The same family have farmed the estate for three generations and the current owners know it as Cowlass Farm. However, local maps also refer to the area as Cowless Farm.
Current owner Carole Cowell, said: "In our time here we've heard people refer to it as both Cowlass and Cowless. We found an old farm diary in the loft dated 1871 and it named one of the fields as Cowlass Jones, but the house as Cowless Farm. To add to the confusion, the diary also mentioned a farmworker called Cowles which could easily have become Cowless over the years."
In fact, the family's own name might also add to the mystery. "There are indeed a number of Cowells in this area, so maybe that has contributed to the muddle," adds Carole.
The farm is in a stunning location and has been Carole's home for nearly 40 years. "It's a wonderfully peaceful setting and while we love to go to London it's always bliss to come back home - it's just so unspoilt," she says.
Cowlass Barn is now for sale with planning permission for conversion into three holiday lets. Graham Newman from estate agents, Mullucks Wells, is keen to solve the mystery of the property's name. He said: "It's fascinating when we deal with a property like this. Clearly there's a lot of history to the farm and it would be great to at least discover how it came to have two names!"
Anyone with any additional information regarding the history of the farm and its name should contact Graham Newman at Mullucks Wells on 01799 520520.
