Manuden School Pupils Throw Down Gauntlet To Emergency Services

Staff from Mullucks Wells estate agents and Pellys solicitors in Bishop’s Stortford will become race stewards for a day, in Manuden’s first ever Emergency Services Soapbox Challenge, on Saturday 7th July, starting at 2pm.

The two companies are co-sponsors of the Manuden Primary School event, in which pupils from the school will compete against representatives from Police, Fire, Ambulance and the AA. They are all taking part in a knockout competition to race hand-made carts down a 400 metre course along Mallows Green Lane, on the edge of the village.

A total of 16 carts will compete in three separate heats – Novice, Rookie and Constructors Championships, involving members the Fire Brigade from Stansted Mountfitchett, Police and Ambulance crews from Stansted Airport, and a team from the local Automobile Association – which brands itself as ‘the fourth emergency service’.

Organiser David Alexander, whose son goes to the school said. “My grateful thanks go out to Mullucks Wells and Pellys for sponsoring the event, and to the members of the emergency services, who have thrown themselves into this project with such enthusiasm. Some of the pupils were worried that the adults’ driving skills might provide them with an easy route to success, but in fact their greater weight means that they are at a distinct disadvantage!”

The carts, which have been built by parents and children themselves, will be powered only by an initial push from team mates at the top of the one-in-ten slope. The width of the single-track lane, which will be sealed-off for the duration of the event, is just enough to allow two competing carts to race side-by-side at any one time.

David Alexander added: “There’s an immense amount of friendly rivalry between the emergency services – although the Police are threatening to use a stinger, the Fire Brigade are bringing their water cannon, and the AA say they might well remove a wheel in an act of mechanical sabotage. Hopefully we won’t need Pelly’s legal services or Mullucks Wells’ ability to find suitable accommodation, to keep the warring factions apart!”
