Local Author Selects Mullucks Wells Competition Winners!

Left to right: winners Betty Rook, Rosa Dunkley, George Powell and Oliver Cummins

Local author Jojo Moyes has chosen 8 year old Oliver Cummins from Little Hadham as the overall winner of the Mullucks Wells Christmas Poetry Competition.

Throughout last month, local school children were asked to describe their favourite aspects of the festive season in a poem of up to eight lines.

Oliver, who goes to Bishop’s Stortford College, receives a deluxe art box and a £100 cheque for his school. His winning entry read:

The frosty morning coats the ground

And jingles float into the night

I leave my bed without a sound

And stand before the tree so bright

I can’t believe what my eyes see

A hill of boxes at my toes

I think of all the toys with glee

But hope Mum hasn’t bought me clothes!

The other winners in the Under 9 category who also received an art box were 5 year old Betty Rook from Dame Bradbury's in Saffron Walden and 8 year old Rosa Dunkley from Thaxted Primary and in the Under 11 category they were 11 year old George Powell from R A Butler in Saffron Walden and Eve-May Simpson from Northgate Primary in Bishop's Stortford.

Runners Up received a £10 book voucher and were as follows:

Tom Harrack, 9, Bishop's Stortford College; Cameron Simmons, 5, Dame Bradbury's; Alice Sandom, 8, Thaxted Primary, Phoebi Herschdorfer, 11, R A Butler and Eve Colclough, 10, Northgate Primary.

Judge Jojo Moyes said: "Both the number and quality of the entries was exceptionally high, and made judging this competition a very difficult task - although a very enjoyable one! The poems which really stood out for me were those which honestly reflected a family Christmas - the 4am stocking rummage, very ‘merry’ relatives, being dragged around the shops, and eating too much - but also those that looked a little wider, and remembered those children further afield who are not so fortunate.

“This competition demonstrates that there is obviously a lot of talent out there, and I do hope all the entrants will carry on with their writing."
