Surprises from a Bachelors Chest in the Dunmow Saleroom

An early Georgian burr walnut and later crossbanded bachelors chest with three drawers made well over £15,000 (inclusive of premium) at yesterday’s (Monday 20th November) Mullucks Wells selected Fine Art and Antiques Sale in the Dunmow Salerooms. "This early Georgian chest was the surprise of the day making 50 times the estimate," says Lloyd Rust, Saleroom Manager, Mullucks Wells. “We were hoping for a good price as we had considerable interest before the sale, including a visit by the north country dealer who eventually bought this lot!”

A second surprise was an 18th century provincial mother of pearl & silver bowl (estimate £40-60) which made £4,000 – In all it was a good sale with a total of £125,000 made for the 700 or so lots.

Of local interest, the W Loveday & Son, Chelmsford Clock : circa 1900 fusee wall dial (estimate £150 - £250) made £290 and a large collection of horse brasses, quite rare and sought after in their locality, including the ‘Badge of Merit given by the Bishops Stortford and District Horse Parade 1913 (estimate £100 - £150) fetched £200.
