Compulsory Membership to Ombudsman Scheme for NAEA Members
From 3rd April 2006, all National Association of Estate Agents’ members will be subject to compulsory membership of the Ombudsman for Estate Agents scheme This is a significant move towards Government targets to ensure that all agents belong to a redress scheme.
According to Bill McClintock, OEA Chairman, “It will take us from representing a minority of agents to a majority and that will be a very significant step. With the Office of Fair Trading having granted us Stage Two approval recently, this has been a very good year for us and adds considerable strength to our position and the benefits we can offer consumers.”
Mr McClintock said that the compulsory membership would cover lettings as well as sales
The NAEA announcement coincided with the announcement that property leaders, including the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the NAEA and the OEA, are looking into the feasibility of a single, national property ombudsman to deal with consumer complaints.
A working party has been set up to look into the idea and Mr McClintock said the plan was that individual schemes, such as the OEA, would continue, but one single point of entry, covering matters such as house building and conveyancing, as well as home buying and letting, would make it more straightforward for consumers who wished to make a complaint.
