Another Successful Sale from the Mullucks Wells Auction Rooms

Auctioned; fascinating sarcophagus and
part of a local collection of some belongings of Sir James Thompson Ritchie

Items in the Mullucks Wells Fine Art and Antiques Sale in the Dunmow Salerooms yesterday Monday 21st November sold well making around £140,000 in total.

Of the individual items, a Graeco Roman period carved marble sarcophagus, probably a child’s sarcophagus, thought to be at least 2000 years old and bearing the inscription of ‘Fufidia Tyche’ - a Roman female name from around AD 100 - was sold to a provincial trade purchaser for £880.

Highest price of the day was for a pair of oil on canvas naval marine scenes with ‘HMS Brunswick’ (est £3000 to £5000) attributed to Thomas Buttersworth, which made £10,000. The paintings went to the London trade. The oil on canvas full length portrait of Sir James in full majorial regalia by Philip Tennyson Cole (estimate £1000 to £1500) made £750.
