Next Fine Art & Antiques Auction - Monday 21st November
For auction; fascinating sarcophagus and
part of a local collection of some belongings of Sir James Thompson Ritchie
A Graeco Roman period carved marble sarcophagus, and probably a child’s sarcophagus, is an exciting find for sale in the Mullucks Wells Selected Fine Art and Antiques Sale in the Dunmow Salerooms on Monday 21st November.
"When an army officer stationed in Italy during the Second World War the vendor’s father formed a local archaeology group, then continued his interest when he returned to London seeking out items that appealed to him; this sarcophagus he bought for his garden where it has since stayed," explained Lloyd. “It is thought to be at least 2000 years old and bears the inscription of ‘Fufidia Tyche’ - a Roman female name from around AD 100.” There are other items from this local collection in the sale.
Sir James Thompson Ritchie KT (1835 – c1914) was, in his time, President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Lord Mayor of London. “His descendants, who live in the Dunmow area, are selling a number of extremely interesting items from the family collection,” says Lloyd Rust, Saleroom Manager, Mullucks Wells.
Included in the sale from the collection are
oil on canvas full length portrait of Sir James in full majorial regalia by Philip Tennyson Cole (estimate £1000 to £1500)
interesting group of medals belonging to Charles John Ritchie CBE, JP (est £400 to £600)
circa 1900 Heraldic staff with brass unicorn (the crest of the Ritchie family) (est £40 to £60)
