About Saffron Walden and Surrounding Area
Saffron Walden grew around a Norman castle and Abbey and is a quintessential market town with narrow streets and historic buildings. It still retains much of its medieval street pattern and is a delightful place to visit.
The famous market was established by medieval landowners to sell the plentiful crops which grew in the rich soil in this area. Amongst these crops was the small autumn flower, the Crocus Sativus, Saffron Crocus, which people came from far afield to buy and which gave Saffron Walden its name. This plant was, as is still the case, used for cooking, as a medicine and as a dye.
In the early 17th Century, the building of the magnificent Audley End House was commissioned by the first Earl of Suffolk in order to entertain royalty but fell into disrepair. Extensive rebuilding and repair were carried out during the 18th and early 19th Centuries and the elaborately decorated rooms, superb art collection and extensive 19th Century natural history collection is now open to the public. The extensive grounds, which also feature a restored walled Victorian Kitchen Garden, ornamental garden buildings, elaborate beds and charming Elysian garden cascade, host a series of events and open air concerts in the summer months.
The recreational, sporting and social facilities in the town are excellent and it has some of the best schools in the area. Our office, which handles property for sale in Saffron Walden and surrounding areas, occupies a prime town centre position and covers an area to the south of the town as far as the historic market town of Thaxted, west to the A10, into south Cambridgeshire to the north and east to the lovely Suffolk village of Clare. The area is famous for it’s beautiful villages and stunning countryside, but still offers easy access to motorways, Stansted Airport and good rail networks.
