Situated in the heart of rural Essex is the historic market town of Great Dunmow. Close to the new A120 trunk road, Great Dunmow is now within a 10 minute drive of the M11 and Stansted Airport, making it an ideal location for the commuter. It is also within an easy 9 mile drive of Bishop’s Stortford and 12 of Chelmsford, both of which provide extensive shopping and recreational facilities as well as a high speed train link into central London.
Great Dunmow has origins dating back beyond the Romans and was in an important position on Stane Street, a main Roman route between Colchester and St Albans. Its main trade was wool which helped it to grow into an important market centre. It is well know for the Flitch Trials, which started in Little Dunmow around 1120, where married couples who can prove they have not quarrelled for a full year, were given a side of bacon. This tradition was revived in 1855 by the novelist Harrison Ainsworth and the trials are, to this day, held every 4 years.
The town is a quaint market town which still retains its ‘olde worlde’ charm. Packed with beautiful buildings, old inns and good restaurants, the town is also an ideal centre for exploring the surrounding area. There is easy access to the much photographed Essex villages of Finchingfield and Great Bardfield and the historic towns of Thaxted and Saffron Walden are just a short drive away. Coggeshall and Halstead, with their fine assortment of antique centres, are also close by. For walkers and nature lovers, the National Trust owned Hatfield Forest offers 1000 acres of pasture and woodland to explore.
